The First Page Interview
Welcome Julianne and Mark. Can you tell us what your book is about?
It is an hilarious romp through the world’s best cocktails and mock-tails with witty cartoons and recipes that can be enjoyed by all with non-alcoholic recipes for the kids and big kids. Plus, snippets of history about the most known cocktails. It is a book that everyone can enjoy
The first page is perhaps one of the most important pages in the whole book. It’s what draws the reader into the story. Why did you choose to begin your book this way?
The first page is really the cover as it draws in the reader into the fun and witty tone of the book. It was important that the reader saw that he/she would be entertained and that the humour on the first page would draw the reader in to see if the book tickled their fancy. The page ,however that I will show, is that which I used to set the tone of the book and to promote further the recipes and cartons that follow
In the course of writing your book, how many times would you say that first page changed and for what reasons?
Mark is a prolific and highly acclaimed Australian cartoonist with many national and international awards to his name. He is very spontaneous and quick- witted . I believe it took him less than a day to come up with the idea completed and in colour.
Was there ever a time after the book was published that you wished you had changed something on the first page?
No
What advice can you give to aspiring authors to stress how important the first page is?
Go with your head and your heart
