Smoke hung heavy in the air, burning Leif’s eyes as he took in his surroundings. Turning in a slow circle, he searched for the source of the noxious fumes. Where the hell is it coming from? Are we under attack?
Dropping to all fours, he blindly crawled for several minutes, searching for the source. Thankfully, a soft breeze blew in, clearing the smoke from around him. With his eyes stinging, Leif stood and coughed as if he smoked a pack a day. Blinking to clear the tears away, he stared in horror at the ghastly sight before him.
Stretching in all directions, hundreds, if not thousands, of funeral pyres burned around him. Their insidious flames reached high into the sky, belching oily black smoke so thick it blotted out the sun. Goosebumps erupted across his skin as he approached the nearest pyre. Flames scalded his face as he peered into the inferno. Leif somehow knew what he would find, but he needed to look anyway. Chained to their fiery grave, the blackened husk of the poor soul stared unblinking at the heavens. Its mouth was agape in a silent scream. Leif’s stomach roiled as he gagged, and his legs went weak at the knees.
“I hope you didn’t think hiding here in this backwater realm would keep you or your people safe?” said a gravelly voice from behind him.
Leif turned, his hands flashing to his belt. “Shit!” He cursed when his hands found empty air where his axes should be.
