Freedom Park was empty Thursday morning, except for Dustoff. The fact that the Organization had chosen Freedom Park for this clandestine meeting was ironic and symbolic. The Organization’s plans had nothing to do with freedom, at least not the type of freedom the citizens of this country fought for. In fact, the meeting had nothing to do with the Constitution at all.

Dustoff and the Organization didn’t always see eye to eye. He didn’t particularly care for the civil rights movement and despised the changes the movement brought about. He didn’t care about what precipitated Desert Storm or Guantanamo Bay. All that mattered to Dustoff was making America a better
nation and home. All that mattered to him was giving this country a strong power structure again. He didn’t care how it was done.

By nature, Dustoff was suspicious and untrusting. He commanded a compound of close to two hundred and fifty young men who shared his goals; still he had no close friends and had no family he wanted to claim.

On the day of the meeting, he arrived early. He inspected his surroundings, knowing he would find no one or nothing in the park that could implicate him. Satisfied, he sat and waited.

It didn’t bother Dustoff that he was early, because it gave him a chance to settle down and watch the day, as it got started. By 0730 that morning, he already knew it would be a beautiful day. He turned his face skyward and sniffed.

The air smelled fresh and felt cool on his skin.
