Furious barking woke me from a very nice dream in which my ex-fiancé Allan Hunter was on his knees, begging me to stay, and I had just flung his ring back in his face in a most satisfying manner. The fact he’d dumped me for a full-breasted bistro waitress called Tawnee—that’s right, with a double “e”—who clearly said all the right adoring things, had the intelligence of a single-celled organism, and was a tigress

in the bedroom was something I chose to ignore.
The dog wouldn’t stop barking. I opened my eyes, and there he was, a beautiful russet-coloured retriever, barking like mad, but with his tail wagging. Still slightly dazed, I shook my head. What the hell was I doing lying under a tree? I was supposed to be in the library at Chelston Hall, helping Dad, who was in hospital in London with bronchitis, collate the archives of the Hadley family. I could almost hear him say,
“Jane Carstairs, what on earth are you doing there when you should be working?”
The dog was still barking. I’m not afraid of dogs so I raised myself on one elbow. “Here, boy. What’s the matter?”
I held out one hand for him to come over and have a sniff as an introduction. The dog took a few steps forward, then ran back to his original spot, and barked once.

Present Day

Summer Jewel left her briefcase on the bench in the mudroom. “Aunt Em, I’m home.” The only response was her soft sigh in the empty air, which led her to a familiar conclusion that Aunt Em was likely at the Heartsville Community Center, lost in the thrill of bingo and the company of her new beau, Bob.

She shrugged and entered the kitchen. After pouring herself a glass of milk, she perched on a barstool and indulged in a chocolate chip cookie from the Cookie Monster jar–one small comfort that reminded her of simpler times. That’s when she spotted the note:

Darling, I’ll be late getting in. I left your dinner in the microwave. Don’t wait up. Love, Aunt Emily.

Summer’s thoughts drifted to Aunt Em’s newfound love and her own solitary heart. After falling in love with Bob, the change in her aunt’s life gave Summer hope that she might find love someday.

The years since college had been a quiet parade of uneventful days and lonely nights. The inheritance from her parents—the house, the family bookstore, Jewel’s Literary Gems, and a considerable sum— was a bittersweet reminder of what she had lost.

She would’ve given it all back to have them in her life. Twenty years ago, her mom and dad had chartered a plane for a romantic weekend getaway that turned disastrous—neither the aircraft, black box, nor her parents’ bodies had ever been found. At nine, she had been too young to remember much about it. Aunt Emily, her father’s sister, had raised her. The tragic mystery of their disappearance left a void no wealth could fill.

Her reverie was broken by a loud backfire from a vehicle outside, followed by grinding gears. Curiosity piqued, Summer approached the entertainment room and peered through the three-inch wooden blinds. She watched a moving van pull in and park across the street in front of the old Victorian house she’d always admired. The place had sat empty for years. She once heard that the house had been part of a large farm. She loved the old Victorian’s steep, varied, red-shingled rooflines, towers, and turrets and adored the stained-glass windows with their gingerbread trim work.

The house had always seemed a bit out of place in their neighborhood. The lovely old home’s renovation had started last year and looked complete from her vantage point. Whoever the owners were, they’d kept the charming home’s character. Craning her neck, she couldn’t tell if the newcomers were a family.

Summer ventured out the side pedestrian door, her gaze drawn to the moving activity. Three men were unloading furniture from the truck, one clearly in charge. As their eyes met, Summer felt a sudden rush of nervousness.

She approached her mailbox, and one of the men raised his hand in greeting. She fumbled with a piece of junk mail. “Moving in?” she called out.

He walked to the end of the driveway. “Hi, I’m Erik, the designer.” Without waiting for her response, he quickly asked, “Have you ever met the owners?”

How odd. “Um. No. Why? Haven’t you?”

“I hoped you might know them. We worked through an attorney who never disclosed their names.” He shrugged. “No harm in asking.”

“I love the house. Is there any chance I could peek inside?” Sure, it was forward of her, but it might be the only way to satisfy her curiosity.

Erik nodded. “This is our last load of furniture, so why not? I love showing off my work.” He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a business card. “I’m posting the project online. I would appreciate it if you’d leave a glowing comment on social media.” His hands tented.

“Sure thing.” Summer hated social media but took his card anyway.

She followed him up the painted plank steps through the open door.

An elaborate crystal chandelier hung in the entry. In front of her, the rich mahogany staircase dazzled against a backdrop of blue-green textured walls. A baby grand piano was positioned in the living room corner to the left of a rock fireplace. The art over the mantel looked like a Renoir. She wondered if it was an original or a reproduction.

Then something weird happened. The hair on her neck and arms rose. She had a deja vu feeling as if she had been there before. Trying to shake off the unsettling sensation, she turned in a slow circle and said, “It’s beautiful, better than I even imagined. I love it!”

Erik seemed pleased with her assessment, grinning from ear to ear. “I chose warm, rich colors. I can’t stand the fact that most designers are like sheep. The minimalists’ interior design with white is so overused and blah,” he said with an eye roll. “I updated the lighting fixtures and completely renovated the central kitchen. It’s three stories with the attic and a downstairs complete with a cookery and staff rooms.”

A mover dropped one end of a very expensive-looking bureau. Erik shouted, “Do not scratch the floors or furniture.” Then he glanced apologetically at Summer. “I’ve got to work. I have a deadline with instructions to leave the house by seven o’clock this evening. Feel free to look around.”

Yippee—freedom’s call echoed in her heart, inviting her to explore uninhibited. Summer drifted through the library first. Its walls were lined with ancient, leather-bound books. The scent of old paper and the hushed tales of forgotten lore surrounded her, igniting a thrill only a true book lover could understand and appreciate. Each step was a dance with history as her fingers trailed over the spines, noting the weight in their textured covers.

The library seamlessly gave way to an entertainment room, where contemporary met old-world design, asserting itself with an audacious flair. A large, ultra-high-definition television screen dominated one wall, surrounded by a state-of-the-art sound system. Soft, ambient lighting emanated from cleverly hidden sources, casting a glow that accentuated luxurious furnishings from the plush, angular sofa to the gleaming, geometric coffee table.

The kitchen made a bold statement with its brand-new stainless-steel appliances, rustic oak cabinets, and white and gray marble counters. The walk-in pantry door was ajar, so she peeked inside to find it vast and orderly, a trove of culinary possibilities. She suspected exotic spices and gourmet delights filled the closed shelves and drawers.

Adjacent to this culinary haven, a set of narrow, almost secretive steps curled upward, their very existence a whisper of intrigue. She glanced furtively over her shoulder. Erik was absorbed in positioning the remaining pieces in the living room.

Her pulse quickened with the thrill of undercover exploration. Memories of countless novels she had devoured over the years surged within her—a cascade of adventures, hidden rooms, and undiscovered treasures that had always seemed worlds away were now seemingly within her grasp. With each step into the unknown, her pulse quickened with anticipation, and her mind buzzed. What secrets and mysteries lay hidden in this century-old home?

Summer hustled up the stairs, bypassed the second floor, and continued into the attic. She’d long fantasized about writing a novel in such a superb, renovated space with its black, charcoal walls and a shade darker woodwork, a cozy white sofa with black and gold accent pillows—and how she loved the black lacquer desk. The lighting included several sconces with candle-like bulbs that glimmered warmly. It was a nice touch. She murmured, “Totally jealous of the owners.”

She peered through the horizontally installed cameo windows, the view of which looked directly at her house. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a shimmering swirling blue light materialized on the other side of the room. It formed a doorway of sorts, like beams of a hidden sun trapped within its frame, defying the laws of physics and reality.

What the heck? Summer cautiously approached, each step filled with fear and fascination. She reached out tentatively toward the opening, her hand trembling slightly. Was it a gateway to worlds unseen?

TIME TIDIES up after itself better than most of us realise, so I’ll be brief. I want to get everything down while I can still remember how it happened.

It started with a note: Blue ink on a slip of paper you might mistake for a Christmas cracker joke, with these words written in a plain and precise hand: ‘We know. We can help. Come to the Thrawn Laddie, Edinburgh, 7.30pm Wednesday.’

I was at the off-licence, digging for change in the outside pocket of my suit jacket, when I found the note. I was down to one suit that still fitted and wore it most days - I was, more or less, still keeping up appearances - so the note might have been curled up there for hours, days or even months. I glanced at it without really reading it and stuffed it back into my pocket, where it stayed until I made it back to the flat with the evening’s beer supply.

Once the bottles were safely in the fridge, I emptied my pockets, throwing a fistful of old train tickets and crumpled till receipts into the bin. The note nearly joined them, but something about the neatness of the script caught my eye, and I read it properly for the first time. ‘We can help’. Who could help? How could they help? Where had it come from? I left it on the kitchen table for the rest of the week; a minor mystery pinned under a beer bottle.

Jóhann Schweizer lived in Biel, Switzerland. Like his father and grandfather before him, he made watches—watches of the very highest precision and quality. Only the purest gold and silver were used for his casings and the most modern technology of the time for his clockwork mechanisms. Cylinder and lever escapements and jewel bearings made with rubies or diamonds ensured his watches were accurate and durable. People from all over Europe, and even America, bought his timepieces, particularly the popular pocket watches.

Siegfried von Ballenstedt, a wealthy Prussian, knew of Jóhann’s reputation as one of the most renowned watchmakers in Switzerland, perhaps in all the world. Wishing to purchase several watches for what he called ‘a special purpose’, he wrote to Jóhann asking him to come to Berlin with his very best pocket watches.

Of course, Jóhann could not refuse. This was an opportunity that could very well lead to his dominance in the growing watch market throughout all the Germanic nation states.

✍The First Page & Interview: THE SHADOW OF ATLANTIS by Wendy Leighton-Porter

THE SHADOW OF ATLANTIS

by Wendy Leighton-Porter

James and Isabel Lancelot have disappeared in mysterious circumstances, leaving behind their children, 10-year-old twins Jemima and Joe. Nobody has a clue what’s happened to them, except for the family cat who was the sole witness to their disappearance. Using the portal of an old book – Shadows from the Past – the couple have travelled back in time but, having left behind the key to bring them home, they are now trapped somewhere in the past. With their parents missing, the twins are sent to live with their Uncle Richard, a professor of ancient history and archaeology, where they soon befriend their new next-door-neighbour, Charlie, a super-brainy boy who is the same age as them.

At the start of the school summer holidays, the three children decide to investigate the old book that had belonged to the twins’ father. Finding the book locked, they’re unable to open it until Jemima discovers she has the key. It was on her mother’s necklace, left abandoned on the attic floor after their parents’ disappearance. And there’s more… The children find a small pouch inside the wooden chest that contained the book and, inside the pouch are four golden charms shaped like owls.

With the book unlocked, an astonishing series of events begins to unfold. The youngsters hear whispering voices carried by a strong breeze that comes out of nowhere and then, a strange cloud fills the room. Through the mist, they see tantalising glimpses of an ancient city. Joe is the first to discover that if they step inside this cloud it will take them to another place. Jemima is surprised to hear her mother’s voice calling to her, reminding her to pick up the all-important key. Then, holding Max, her beloved Tonkinese cat, in her arms, Jemima follows the two boys into the mist. Arriving in the lost city of Atlantis, the children are astounded to find that it was no myth, but a real, historical place. And so their adventures begin…

It doesn’t take them long to realise the owl charms are mini translation tools, enabling them to communicate with the Atlanteans, but when Jemima attaches one to Max’s collar, the large cat begins to speak. The children can’t believe their ears, especially when Max tells them the truth about their parents’ disappearance. The twins are overjoyed to learn that their parents aren’t dead but simply lost in time, and now their quest begins in earnest. They must find and rescue James and Isabel, searching throughout the pages of history. But, first, the youngsters have an important mission – to warn the people of Atlantis about the disaster that will soon destroy their city. Will they succeed? And can they find their way back to the safety of their own time before it’s too late?

Max blinked in surprise, scarcely able to believe his eyes. A cloud of mist had appeared in the middle of the room – he’d never seen anything like that in the house before. What was it? Where had it come from? At its heart, lit by an eerie glow, he glimpsed the shadowy image of an ancient city. It was a bit like a mirage that travellers sometimes see in the desert and, in the same way that a mirage looks real but shimmers in the heat haze before gradually fading from view, so the fuzzy outline of the town now flickered and began to disappear.

Max gasped as a hand suddenly shot out of the mist, clawing desperately at the bare floorboards of the attic, while horrified voices cried out from deep within the cloud.

‘What are you doing, Isabel? Where’s the key? What have you done with it?’

‘I don’t know. I can’t find it. I must have left it on the floor next to the book.

‘Seriously? But you know we can’t get home again without the key. We’ll be stuck here, and no one will know how to find us.’

‘What? Oh, no, James, we have to go back. What about the twins? This can’t be happening. What are we going to do? Help, someone, help us, please…’

The anguished cries grew fainter as the image of the city continued to fade and the searching hand melted away, its scrabbling fingers the last things to go. Then, all was quiet once more.

Max cocked his head on one side, focusing his aquamarine eyes on the last shreds of mist, but there was no longer any sign of the outstretched arm. The desperate voices had ceased and only the rasping of his own breath broke the silence. They’d vanished. Where had they gone? Alone and afraid, Max remained rooted to the spot, rubbing a paw over his eyes as he stared at the empty space where the vision had been. He settled down to wait for James and Isabel to come back, but he wasn’t to know that the gateway to the past had now closed and that they were trapped inside. The large Tonkinese cat was seized with panic. What should he do? Should he go and fetch help? But how could he do that? Nobody would be able to understand him.

Getting to his feet, he padded over to a carved wooden chest that sat on the floor and peered inside. Its open lid revealed a threadbare, blue velvet lining, but nothing else – it was empty. Hmm, so no clues there, then. Beside the chest lay an old book…. Wait, what was that? There, next to the book, Max spotted Isabel’s favourite necklace with its small golden key attached to the delicate chain. Was that what she’d been trying to reach?

He looked around the attic, stumped. Apart from those three objects, no other evidence remained of what had just happened. Realising there was nothing he could do, at least for now, Max headed for the door, heaving a deep sigh as he cast a final glance back over his shoulder.

Welcome to The First Page! The first page is perhaps one of the most important pages in the whole book. It’s what draws the reader into the story. Why did you choose to begin your book this way?

I chose to start my book with this because it sets the scene for everything that follows. The book (the first in a series) revolves around ten-year-old twins, Jemima and Joe Lancelot, whose parents have disappeared in mysterious circumstances. No one knows what has happened to them, apart from the family cat, Max… but he can’t tell anyone, can he, because he’s only a cat and can’t talk? Or can he? And, of course, the reader knows something the twins don’t, because we’ve witnessed their parents’ disappearance too. As the story develops and the children embark on a quest to find the missing adults, the cat is later able to reveal what he knows!

In the course of writing your book, how many times would you say that first page changed and for what reasons?

I changed it at least three or four times until I was happy with it. Originally, I started with just the voices and Isabel’s hand reaching out from inside the strange misty cloud. Then, I realised that I wanted to place greater emphasis on Max’s presence and to give him more of an anthropomorphic character, with thoughts and feelings that are almost human.

Was there ever a time after the book was published that you wished you had changed something on the first page?

I actually made the above changes afterwards – one of the benefits of self-publishing! I use KDP for the eBook version and POD for the paperback, so it was easy to do.

What advice can you give to aspiring authors to stress how important the first page is?

Agents and publishers always stress the importance of a “hook” in the opening lines of a book, something that will draw the reader in and make them eager to continue. When you’ve written your first chapter, take a step back and read the opening paragraph aloud to yourself as if you’re seeing it for the first time. Would you be hooked? It also helps if you can ask someone else to read it and give their truly honest opinion.

After teaching French, Latin, and Classical Studies for almost twenty years, Wendy’s career took a new direction when she turned to her first love – books – and decided to devote herself to writing children’s fiction. With the old adage “Write about what you know” in mind, when she first came up with the idea for her series of time-travel adventures, she jumped head-first into the ancient world of classical history and mythology which formed the backdrop for her first three books. As the series moves forward in time, she sets each story in historical periods that have always fascinated her. Although no longer in the classroom, she seeks to entertain her young readers, to engage them, to foster a love of reading, but also to educate. As she takes them on a thrilling journey into the past alongside her three young time-travellers and their talking cat, Wendy hopes that her love of history, myth and legend will rub off on them along the way.
